News on the Independence Day sequel has been relatively nonexistent over the past few months, with no new updates, photos or interviews with any of the cast or director. However, rumors are starting to circulate that the first teaser trailer for Indepdnence Day 2, officially titled Independence Day: Resurgence, will in fact make its debut before Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which opens in theaters December 18th.
Of the films jockying for preview status on easily what is going to be the most popular film of the decade, Independence Day: Resurgence is likely one of the few with the budget to do so. Back when the first Independence Day film was being marketed, 20th Century Fox purchased a costly spot during the 1995 Super Bowl. This past year, not even Universal Pictures' Jurassic World took advantage of the massice Super Bowl audience.
When you factor in the lack of recent updates and marketing as well as previous marketing strategies for the franchise, it seems likely that 20th Century Fox are waiting to unleash their IDR trailer before another massive audience. Time will tell if these rumors are true, but we're certainly hoping they are.
