An Edge of Tomorrow sequel has been talked about for years now, but new comments by the sci-fi epic co-star Emily Blunt suggest that sequel might not ever get made now.
While speaking on the Howard Stern Show last week, Blunt explains that despite herself, Tom Cruise and Doug Liman all wanting to move forward with Edge of Tomorrow 2, it seems like the film might be too expensive for Warner Brothers to film right now:
Honestly, I think the movie is probably too expensive. Yeah, I just don’t know how we’re going to do it. I think that it’s hard to align everyone’s schedules. I would love it. Doug Liman would love it. Tom would love it. We’d all love to do it. But I think until we figure out what’s going on with the industry – honestly, I think we need to figure out what is the next road map for the kinds of films that people want to make?
Arguably she has a point, Hollywood bled money for the entirety of the Covid-19 pandemic, so it's unlikely Edge of Tomorrow is on their radar at the moment. Since the first film's debut back in 2014, sci-fi fanatics have been eager to see a continuation of the story - so there certainly is a following behind the franchise, but the first Edge of Tomorrow only garnered the studio a little over $370 million at the box office - not the type of revenue giant Warner Brothers are going to be looking at to recoup their lost profits from the pandemic.
Previous to this news, back in December of 2020 Blunt was quoted in an interview with THR acknowledging that she had read the script for Edge of Tomorrow 2 and that she was actually quite excited about it:
Yes, [the script] is really promising and really, really cool. I just don’t know when everything’s going to sort of align, you know what I mean? Between all of our schedules, it would just have to be the right time. But there is something in the works, for sure, that’s a great idea. A great idea.
It's unfortunate to think that an Edge of Tomorrow sequel might never see the light of day despite there being a good script already prepared for it and the main cast eager to return. We certainly hope this is merely a long delay rather than a complete shelving of the franchise. In the meantime, let us know what YOU think in the comments below!

Tom Cruise stars as Lt. Col. Bill Cage, an officer who is killed within minutes of a doomed combat mission to take down a hive-like alien race. He wakes up and is forced to relive the day (and the death) because direct physical contact with the alien has thrown him into a time loop, dooming him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, however improving his skills along the way.
