"At last, we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last we will have our revenge!" While Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace may be almost universally hated by average movie goers and fans alike, one redeeming factors in the movie are of course Darth Maul, his double-bladed lightsaber (or saberstaff if you prefer) and the epic battle between him, Qui Gon Jinn and Obi Wan Kenobi in the movies climax. Despite the movies notorious reputation, assisted in no small part by the most annoying virtual character ever devised; Jar Jar Binks, the character of Darth Maul has stood out as one of the sagas most popular characters, joining the ranks of other iconic characters such as the Stormtroopers, Darth Vader, Boba Fett, Yoda and Boushh. Speaking at the recent Star Wars Celebration event in Anaheim Darth Maul himself Ray Park had the follwing to say about his iconic role, when asked if he would like to return in a standalone movie.
“I would love to be disciplined, like not eat anything for four months, and be shredded and do the whole tattoo body effect like you see in the comics and the novels. I’d love to do that!”
“If Darth Maul was coming back, he should be topless, tattooed, bigger horns, robotic legs! I would love to do it!”
We here at Scified actually quite like the sound of this idea. Not only would a Darth Maul spin off movie give us more of this deliciously evil character, but it could also be used to shed some light on the dark side of the Force and the history and inner workings of the Sith Order. We imagine the movie could be set after the Clone Wars; between episodes III and IV, with flashbacks to the characters past and his initiation into the Sith order as Darth Sidious' apprentice. Ewan McGregor could even reprise his role as Obi Wan Kenobi allowing for a decisive lightsaber duel between the two, with Maul having tracked the reclusive Jedi to Tattooine seeking revenge for his defeat on Naboo in episode I. Possibly the character could also face off against Darth Vader, whereby he would meeth his end but redeem himself b warning Vader of Sidious' treachery and lies.
