Could Dredd be coming to Netflix or Amazon?

2012's Dredd starring Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, and Lena Headey may have become a cult classic among Judge Dredd fans but having only earned $41.5 million in worldwide box office takings against it's $45 million budget makes the movie a commercial flop. While star Urban has recognized the movies recognition among fans and rallied repeatedly for a sequel the reality is that Lionsgate, who distributed the movie, will not sanction a sequel after such a poor box office performance.

A couple of weeks ago a fan tweeted Urban, though initially the stars response was seen as little more than fan service and the actor's continuing passion for the 2000 AD character...

Yet, while attending the Calgary expo in Canada this week it appears, from the following tweet broken by ScreenGeek someone from either Amazon, Netflix or both are interested in the prospect of expanding upon the world seen 2012's Dredd into a new VOD series.

With the continuing success that both DC and Marvel are having on the small screen the prospect of a Dredd TV series seems very enticing, and with many Hollywoods stars appearing more and more on the small screen the possibility of Urban returning for the role seems almost certain.

Based on a long-running comic book series, Dredd's well-established fanbase could be in for a wealth of hard-hitting, action-packed TV viewing if Netflix and/or Amazon and Urban can form a dedicated, experienced and talented production team.
