Since Carrie Fisher's extremely sad and unfortunate passing, Star Wars fans around the world have wondered what will become of her iconic character - Princess / General Leia Organa in the upcoming episodic and anthology Star Wars films. Many have jumped to the conclusion that Lucasfilm will recreate her likeness using CGI, like they did in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, while others felt that approach may be inappropriate. It didn't take long for Lucasfilm to address the rumors surrounding Leia's fate, posting an official announcement to the official Star Wars website, reading:
We don’t normally respond to fan or press speculation, but there is a rumor circulating that we would like to address. We want to assure our fans that Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess or General Leia Organa.
Carrie Fisher was, is, and always will be a part of the Lucasfilm family. She was our princess, our general, and more importantly, our friend. We are still hurting from her loss. We cherish her memory and legacy as Princess Leia, and will always strive to honor everything she gave to Star Wars.
So, as it stands, Carrie Fisher will not be rendered using CGI for any upcoming Star Wars films.
However, as we reported last month, Carrie Fisher had already completed filming her scenes for Star Wars: Episode 8 prior to her passing, so fans will get to see Leia once more before her character's fate is decided.
