After next years epic Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man and Captain America 3 will make up the start of phase 3 of Marvels Cinematic Universe, but many have been wondering where the universe will go now that S.H.I.E.L.D. is no longer around to protect the identities of our intrepid superheroes. Thanks to Variety (and Scifider Gojira2K) we now know that the third Captain America movie will kick off the start of a storyline taken straight from the comics, called the Civil War; which will pit Captain America and Iron Man against each other.

Begun, the Civil War has!

The Civil War is a storyline that appeared in Marvel Comics in 2006-2007, whereby the US Government, with the support of Tony Stark (Iron Man) encouraged superheroes to register their identities, both public and secret, and to be answerable to the US Senate. Captain America however desired to keep his real identity secret, and the two former allies became enemies, each with a group of like-minded heroes following their examples.

It is reported that Robert Downey Jr. is to sign a deal that will extend his contract with Marvel Studios and cast him in the third Captain America move alongside co-star Chris Evans. The as-of-yet unititled sequel (Captain America 3: Civil War, anyone?) will again be directed by brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, begin production next Spring and will hit theaters May 6th, 2016.

Whose side are you on?

Marvel Studios President Kevin Fiege reportedly persuaded Marvel Entertainment chief Ike Perlmutter in the gameplan surrounding the Civil War storyline which could drive the MCU in a new, fresh and exciting direction for the next seven years, citing Downey Jr.'s desire and involvement to continue to be a part of the epic franchise. Though initially hesitant Perlmutter reportedly agreed to Fiege's epic plan which will allow the studio to introduce characters new to general audiences, such as Doctor Strange and Black Panther, while continuing the stories of existing heroes, along with the added potential for unprecedented face-offs.

Add to this awesome news the recent reports of Sony allegedly approaching Marvel Studios to include Spider-Man in the MCU, along with other reports that Marvel are to cease Fantastic Four comics and the vito against any new characters being added to the X-Men comics, along with the recent Death of Wolverine storyline; and it seems possible that Marvel Studios may be making motions to reacquire all of their "leased out" properties in a move to include them in this epic story arc?
