After almost a decade of waiting, the release dates of the upcoming Avatar sequels have finally been locked down. This news comes from the official Avatar Facebook page, which posted an image of director James Cameron standing with the crew-members, accompanied by the following text:
Great to be working with the best team in the business! Avatar takes flight as we begin concurrent production on four sequels. The journey continues December 18, 2020, December 17, 2021, December 20, 2024 and December 19, 2025!
We've still got more than three years to wait for the first sequel, but at least now we know for sure when all three films will be rolling into town. Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington are set to reprise their roles from the first movie, with more casting news expected to come shortly.
Avatar became the highest-grossing film of all time when it was released back in 2009, with total earnings of $2,787,965,087. Only time will tell if the long hiatus between the first movie and the sequels has resulted in moviegoers losing interest in the franchise, or if people still flock to the theatres in droves.
