A good TV serial is expected, if not obligated to end a season with an almighty cliffhanger. Be it Sam and Dean Winchester releasing Lucifer from his cage in hell at the end of Supernatural season four, or Nick Burkhardt being sealed in a metal coffin in the climax of Grimm season two; cliffhangers are designed to finish a story on an explosive, dramatic loose end that wil entice viewers to return when the next season is aired. Though seemingly haphazard in nature, the overarching story of The Walking Dead has been written so each seasons cliffhanger escalates, with bigger dramatic effect than the previous seasons cliffhanger - the writers are abe to do this, in part, because the TV series is chronologically behind, although loosely following the overarching plot of the comic book upon which it is based. In season one we saw the CDC fall to the walkers, season two bore the double revelation of Carol's dead daughter and that everyone, alive or dead is infected. Then season three ended with the inevitable attack on the Governors not-so-iddylic sanctuary Woodbury, and finally season four ended with our survivors, many having been pushed to their limits finding the utopian Terminus only to be forced into a freight train box car.
This season 5 teaser (only available for US fans to watch, unfortunately) entices us to return to FOX in October when The Walking Dead returns, showing us footage of Carol, Tyreese and baby Judith, of whom have yet to fall into Terminus' trap, and may be Rick and co's ony hope of a rescue from the residents of Terminus.
