Some films never get made, whereas others never get completed. One of the ways of ensuring that your film proposal is picked up by a studio is to create a proof-of-concept trailer/teaser showing off the filming techniques and basic premise of the movie you have in mind. Even Academy Award winning directors such as James Cameron have used this method to get their movies started - Cameron famously showed off the performance capture technology he intended to use for Avavtar to Studio 20th Century Fox to secure their funding of the movie. Just yesterday fellow team-member Gman2887 posted a link to a video on Twitter, a proof-of-concept trailer for a proposed movie called 'The Leviathan'. With Gman being a huge fan of Japanese cinema it will come as no surprise that the teaser features a large Kaiju-esque creature. I think you'll agree with me that Gman found a gem with this video...
The Leviathan was created by Ruairi Robinson and was developed with the assistance of the Irish Film Board
And Jim Uhls who wrote the script for Fight Club, the Creature was designed by Jordu Schell.
After watching this amazing video it got me thinking, so I did a search and found another five sci fi concept trailers/shorts that should impress, which many of you may not have seen, enjoy.
ATROPA
Atropa, inspired by '70s and '80s sci-fi classics like Alien and Blade Runner, tells of an Off-World Detective investigating the missing research vessel ATROPA. This concept short was directed by Eli Sasich and was written by Clay Tolbert.
ENVOY
Envoy is a science fiction, action adventure, short film used as a proof of concept for full-length motion picture. The makers of this amazing video describe the project as a love-letter to many of the classic action-adventure and science fiction films of the ’80s & ’90s. Envoy was directed by David Weinstein and Visual Effects Supervisor Adam Coggin.
R'HA
Amazingly R'Ha is mostly the work of a sole individual with all of the computer animation and design created by Kaleb Lechowski. Dave Masterson supplied his voice acting talent and Hartmut Zeller scored the trailers sound and music.
ALIENATED
Conceived, animated and directed by Bruce Stirling John Knox and scored by Liliny, Alienated is an amazing animation featuring everyones favorite prefect organism, the Xenomorph; from the Alien franchise. This short is set in an environment perfectly suited to the notorious Alien creature and even hints at a whole new level of evolution for Hollywoods favorite sci fi monster.
THE FLYING MAN
The Flying Man was directed, produced, financed, edited and written by Marcus Alqueres, with Roger Lima supplying the teasers sound and score.
2013's Man of Steel, starring Henry Cavill as Superman was received with mixed opinions from fans and average moviegoers, with many that criticized the movie crticizing the movies darker tone, and shaky camera work. The Flying Mans use of social media and video uploading sites is part of how I actually imagined a Superman reboot could have been done effctively for a modern audience.
I hope you enjoyed these little treats, and thanks again to Gman2887 for his inspiration for these bitesize pieces of sci fi heaven!
