I was so hyped up & nervous before my first viewing of Prometheus that I kind of ruined it for myself!! I was very worried because I wanted to love it and had so many expectations and pre-conceived ideas. After all this was Ridley Scott’s return to the Alien universe! Now anyone who knows me will tell you just how obsessed and fanatical I am about A L I E N & BladeRunner, so like many of you my expectations were very high!
Initially I was disappointed to hear that it was not a direct prequel and that the eerily disturbing Space Jockey turned out to be a large pale humanoid being in a bio suit. Gradually I began to appreciate the new direction it took, & the questions & debate PROMETHEUS has inspired.
The opening sequence is one of the most wonderful, breathtaking pieces of cinematography I have ever seen. The landscapes Ridley chose were epic & added to the immense scale of the story. He made them look primordial, haunting & oh so beautiful.
The casting was pretty much flawless. My only doubt involves Rapace, I found her unconvincing as Shaw, to me, she looked uncomfortable & nervous in the role, but that’s just my humble opinion! :-D
Sure there were aspects which bothered me, amongst others- a woman running around, lifting & climbing after having a self induced C-section!? Why no one gave a hoot about ‘cuddles’? Oh & apologies for having to mention it yet again, but trying to figure out the GREEN CRYSTAL has brought me to the brink of madness!!!
Now I fully understand why Scott said it was not a prequel. It is in fact an updating of/remix/homage to ALIEN, with the benefits a bigger budget and state of the art effects bring. I’m not complaining as we now have another great movie from the same origin, which will hopefully become a duology/trilogy & may just save the Alien Universe from the depths of mediocrity.
I’m sure Prometheus will inspire a return to well executed practical effects. The realism they bring, cannot be matched by CGI effects alone, (which I never enjoy, as they always look like animation to me!)
Prometheus was not the film I expected, nor the film I’d waited all this time for. It didn’t shock or scare me the way Alien did, but it has opened the door to something new & will hopefully take the story to other hellish worlds, perhaps involving new creatures & mind-bending explanations!
