As a response to the huge success in Japan of The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, Toho commissioned their own dinosaur epic, Ishiro Honda's Gojira. The title creature is a product of the atomic age which Japan was still all too familiar with, and this first in the long running series is a deadly serious affair- not the campy creature feature which the series eventually devolved into. There's a poetry to Honda's film which the sequels never captured, and the soon to be released Legendary remake can only aspire to. Simply put, the original 1954 Godzilla is the best dino flick ever. Many have had vastly superior production values, but none will ever match the drama and heart of Honda's classic.
