Killing Newt was a bummer. I should say I still enjoy the movie, just not as much as the others I put above it.

Xenotaris, I dont think david creating the necromorphs is peoples main problem with that movie. I don't mind that at all. David is the best part of that movie. I also like the neomorphs too honestly. The problem is the movie completely undercuts the ending of prometheus by killing off the inhabitants of the space jockey home world and therefore not answering any of the fun questions prometheus set up and also making david a weird genocidal maniac, which I felt messes up his arc from prometheus. the characters are also extremely generic and uninteresting other than david himself. I feel like prometheus got made fun of because of some valid reasons, and some very dumb reasons so ridley scott totally abandoned everything that made it interesting for Covenant and ended up taking away almost everything that made Prometheus interesting.

Its okay. Alien 3 had alot of things going for it, mostly atmosphere and a sick new Alien design. Unfortunately my only beef with Alien 3 is them killing off Newt and Hicks then later Ripley.

the puppet is practical but the composite isn't. I know its not cgi. I was using the term improperly. 

Hydra, Are you saying you didnt love watching mothra drown for like 5 solid minutes in the rebirth of mothra movie? lol. If you love the american king of the monsters movie with ghidorah I would recommend the original Ghidorah the three headed monster movie. It is a fun time. good luck on your kaiju movie journey.

But Puppetry IS a Practical Effect along with man-in-a-suit, animatronic, stop-motion and go motion. CGI means Computer Generated Imagery 

Cool Godzilla

Alien Covenant, I know a lot of people dislike Alien Covenant because Ridley Scott wanted David to be the creator but I think David merely made his own xenomorph offshoot basing them off of the Engineer's xenomorphs. 

I also liked the Neomorphs, now the human characters... I thought they were okay but I don't watch these movies for the humans.

side note. all the special features on DVD's were awesome and it seems like we have lost that on blu rays and that is a huge bummer.

The genetically engineered prehistoric locust plot was quite dumb but kind of in character for BioSyn but at the same time still dumb. Biosyn wanted to be the only corporation to be in charge of producing Food. I mean in the books Biosyn were careless assholes but the movie turned them into Umbrella Chemical Corporation while the previous movies turned InGen/Masrani Global into the Weyland-Yutani Corporation.

Also I didn't like how human centric Dominion and even Fallen Kingdom was compared to past Jurassic Park movies. remember the good old times were the human villains were insignificant to the killer dinosaurs. Remember there was no such thing as a good or bad dinosaur? they were just animals trying to survive

Cool Godzilla Alien covenant. 

Dark Nebula yeah that is true. I remember watching a ton of behind the scenes stuff on the dvd box set of all the movies I had before I loaned it to an asshole friend. I like the suit but the bad composite does fuck it up. I just use "CGI" as a blanket term for any non practical effect. I should watch 3 again. definitely the one I have seen the least because I just dont remember enjoying it as much but maybe it deserves another chance since I havent seen it in 10 years.

Rebirth of Mothra is a stand-alone trilogy not really connected to Godzilla beside sharing a Ghidorah as their adversary.

goatuire I get that "All Monsters Attack" is a bad clipshow movie but isnt it also hilarious? Personally despite it definitely being a bad..... if not the worst godzilla movie, I find it way too funny to put in F tier, although I totally get it that you dont feel the same. fun fact though. Tech N9ne sampled Gabara's roar in the song "Sinister Tech" which I find very funny.

Since Giacchino is directing this, I wonder if he'll also compose the soundtrack for it as well.

I knew Giacchino was going to get a movie after the banger that was Werewolf By Night.

Your a new member, you have only been active on the godzilla forums and you haven't posted anything thats not godzilla related, so I dont think you would of gotten an "account warning for posting in the wrong forum"  and i dont think that even exists, that doesn't make any sense. also, this forum isnt just godzilla, its pretty much an all-around hub for all tokusatsu and giant monster shit. and evangelion definitely qualifies as giant monster shit. which qualifys it for this forum.

goatuire This is a very good list, I think you might be the first person in this thread who put KotM above G14. I agree with your take on GvK though. 14 to KotM definitely had some amount of a leap in technology but it still felt somewhat reasonable, GvK leapt straight ahead into futuristic sci-fi bullshit. I remember seeing the H.E.A.V.s or whatever they're called for the first time and being pretty stunned. Sci-fi bullshit tends to be where a lot of kaiju properties fall apart in my opinion, and it has me worried for the future of the Monsterverse.

The idea of "home-y" or "coming home" is probably the best argument I've heard for staunchly connected universes. A sense of returning the audience to a world they're already invested in has its merits--if done well anyway.

Fun fact: the runner alien was actually a rod puppet that was filmed in front of a blue background (for some shots it was a dude in a suit). The reason it looks so rough is because of the bad compositing, which is a shame because the puppeteering is pretty good.

There isn't any confirmation that it'll be part of the MonsterVerse (though it would be cool if ended up being part of the series). It is interesting that Kong: Skull Island made a reference to Them! though...

at the end of the day I think its just really dull and the cgi is so ugly and takes away from the charm and why I love these movies so much. I do think ripley and the criminals and their dynamic is a lot better than the acting in AvP but at the end of the day I would rather watch the dumb but more entertaining (sometimes more entertaining because its bad) AvP movie. I still really like the set design and art direction of that movie and it keeps it higher than AVPR for that reason. they did somehow manage to make the characters in AVPR even MORE unlikeable than in the first movie lol.

G. H. (Gman) The Gamera trilogy is absolutely S tier. Some of the best films in the entire genre.

I don't like the Showa or Millennium series any LESS because they don't have an overarching story, and I don't give the individual Monsterverse movies any additional credit because GvK is technically the same universe as G2014 even though they couldn't be more tonally distinct from each other.

However, I do sometimes want my cool kaiju movies to be more than drop in/drop out romps in a world we'll never see again. I think there's something to be said for a connected world that starts to feel familiar. Almost home-y. Again, that isn't to say a solo outing can't be deeply impactful and more meaningful than an interconnected story. Gojira and GMK are 2 of my all time favorites. There's plenty of room for both.

I don't really think an interconnected series of films is important for quality. The fact that the Showa series and Millennium series don't put much emphasis on that is a strength rather than a weakness. While the Millennium Series gave writers more freedom to do what they wish, rebuilding an entire world from scratch with almost each movie was time consuming and I think the way they introduced each world quickly mostly worked.

In terms of kaiju films where an interconnected through line was at its best, the Gamera Trilogy has still yet to be topped. I remember watching King of the Monsters in theaters and thinking to myself, "Y'know, I could just be watching Gamera..."

How come Alien 3 is lower than AVP?

G. H. (Gman) Oh I absolutely agree on the space pollution thing. I love the Heisei series, in my opinion it's probably the most consistently enjoyable to watch era of Godzilla, but it's absolutely full of wasted potential and nonsense plotline. I loved Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah when I was younger, but it's pretty rough to get through now with the nonsense time travel plotline. Battle for Earth reads as more of an Indiana Jones movie during the human plot than a kaiju movie, and while that's infinitely charming to me I also fully recognize that it's absurd.

It's interesting to me that Heisei is the first time they really tried to do a fully interconnected series of Godzilla films, and yet the writers decided to do a lot of coke while they tried to settle on a consistent tone for the series. Going from the heart-wrenching A plot of Biollante into yet another scene with Sunglasses Assassin is... pretty wild. Instead of trying to do better with the Millenium era they just dropped the idea of telling a larger story at all, giving us some of the most and least interesting G movies in about a five year span. Say what you will about the Monsterverse, but I'm glad someone decided to try and take up that mantle.

In regards to 84 though, I made an effort to use all tiers with a somewhat even distribution. Even the movies in E tier are ones I would happily watch again basically any time. That said, if I were to rewatch the whole series I'm sure some placements would change. Maybe even the anime trilogy could move up a tier or two lol.

To all the anime movie enjoyers it seems weird that you all place the first higher than the third which I think had the most clever ideas of all three. is it because of Ghidorahs weird design change? the time distortion scene where the spaceship gets destroyed and they see and hear their deaths on the monitor before they die is the best scene in all three movies in my opinion.

I also have a big soft spot for Resurrection. not a good movie, but so many great actors clearly having a great time and the alien newborn is one of my favorite designs. too bad it wasnt in a better movie. I really want to put Prometheus Higher because it had so many great ideas. if they released a cut of the movie with some of the deleted scenes included or someone made a fan edit I would definitely put it in B or maybe even A, but as it stands it just has a lot of issues that hold it back. I dont have much to say about predator 2 other than it is kind of just a fun time but isn't nearly as memorable or well made enough to go higher than B for me. Prey was suprisingly great but some of the dialogue, not fully polished CGI at times, and a couple scenerios I think felt forced keep it from being S tier. I think it was really close to being the best predator movie but unfortunately definitely falls a bit behind the original. I think the rest speak for themselves.
