Concerning #5, if I follow your logic they would have used 8 seconds. One of the oldest counting systems, used by the Harapan culture of the Indus valley was base 8. We also have many instances of base 8 from the ancient world including the musical octave that was inspired by the number of the heavenly bodies. I am sure I could think of other instances.

Didn't Ridley intend to have some sort of 'spores' being stumbled accross by the crew in the original Alien. In an interview it has also been stated that this is what would have happened to the crew of the Nostromo if they had stayed on the Derelict.... Could the Engineers species be waiting for humans to stumble accross them to release their spores so that they can feed on the humans and grow, or use the humans bodies to develop, etc??....

Ok ok...I get it Prometheus not only trying to give us new technology but also creation of a race of Man on earth. Just that if derelict was leaving for Earth when it crashed, why would it return to Earth if it already been there generations before? Or is the SJ's ship a different race/function than the 'saucer'?

Jesscat,
The derelecit definately undocks either from the "mother ship" whose round outline can be seen as Prometheus approaches for a landing or .....................from the top of one of the pyramids. There may be a derelict ship within each of the pyramids.
Just a thought.

You can see many of these eel-like creatures on a mural-like set, seen in a picture taken during the Iceland filming last summer. I agree that these creatures are likely the same as those on the Giger painting. It seems that a lot in the film is based on the original Giger's work on Alien (and I think that is appropriate because it is Giger's mind who was the source of all of this).
I personally believe that the creature may feed on Shaw's liver (stiches on picture are on the right side) through an umbilical and may grow outside the body . In the Greek myth the eagle was eating the liver which was growing again and so on every day.

ReplyMafetuPrometheus ForumAsh....the Company.....and PrometheusApr 3, 2012
There are loop holes in real life, if you bother to look for them.
That being said, I would speculate that the Company had incomplete information gathered 37 years earlier. They knew the organism was something formidable, but were ignorant to its true nature. Admittedly the Nostromo was ill equipped to deal with this creature. Perhaps their proximity to the signal, and their inconspicuity made them the ideal ship to take a sample, in secret. Could the orders to take the specimen have come from a covert faction of the Company?
I agree that Ash was probably speculating, and maybe more, after all, Ash was a very advanced computer capable of precise analysis but he also had something of the poet in him, as well as personality and humor.
ReplyBiz72Prometheus ForumBlade Runner Apr 3, 2012
Am I missing something or are we not counting Star Wars (1977) or Empire Strikes Back (1980) as SciFi films? I'm almost 40, and if I remember correctly, after SW hit big the studios were pumping out S/F films at the cyclic rate to try and ride the wave. That first Trek snooze-fest was originally supposed to be a revival of the series, wasn't it? The Black Hole and Outland are two movies prior to Blade Runner that I think might not have been made without the renewed interest.
I like BR, but I definitely have to be in the mood to watch it. Not a film I'd pop in the Blu ray player to kill time on a Saturday afternoon.

Personally, as a woman, I am not comfortable with this idea, and one of the reasons I like the original Alien is because it is an equal-opportunity....impregnator, if you will. I don't foresee an overtly violent rape scene of a female in this film. It would be in bad taste. Certainly, Alien has always had sexual symbols and I don't think that will ever change (nor should it), and yes, the facehugger/chestburster is invasive in a sexual way and symbolic of rape of women AND men, but that is completely different than a straight-up graphic sex or rape scene of a woman. I hope this is not something ANYONE in their right mind would want to see, nor should we expect it in a big-budget film. Plus, if they are even considering it to be PG-13, you can bet your ass it won't be something like that.
Now, as far as what they're doing to her on that medical table, don't have a clue.

Another fool"s theory on the Promethueus plot. Don't read any further if you don't like possible spoilers:
Here goes:
Invitations to a graduation party have been left behind on many habitable planets by the Engineers who have seeded these planets thousands of years in the past. The only requirement is that the species being invited need to be aware that they have been invited and have the means to get to the party.
Humans find the invitation and head off to the party following the directions left behind. Unbeknownst to the humans, another species arrives first but have other plans. They want to be the new "Kings" on the block.
What do new "Kings" do? On earth, some Kings kill off all of the old Kings children so there will be no retributions or acts of vengeance at a later date. But there is only one problem. The new "Kings" don't know where all the children live (earth) or where the earth is. Or for that matter where all the other "earths" are. Invitations were left behind on several planets represented by the pyramids visisble as Prometheus comes in for a landing. Each pyramid represents a different planet seeded by the Elders (Engineers). Each pyramid contains artificats that will be vaguely familiar to each species when they get around to exploring their particular pyramid.
Our pyramid has the big head with the ampules containing the either the bioformer used to seed our particular planet or the roach bait to wipe out whoever comes by.
The Blue Meanies are the species that beat us to the party. They are the equivalent of child molesters 3rd class. They have laid a trap for all the other species invited. As the new species arrive for their diploma, the Blue Meanies annihilate them (after getting the directions back to their home planet, of course). They then follow the directions to that home planet and kill all the children with the Bio-Weapons they have on board their space vehicle. They use the space cannon/wormhole creator thingy to eradicate the "children". When they are thru killing the "children", they have a turn-key planet to propagate their species.
They then return to the Engineers planet and set the trap for the next species. Eventually, they will get directions to all of the habitable planets that the Engineers seeded. Not only are they bad, they are lazy too!
But something goes wrong with the Blue Meanies plan. The humans figure out that its a trap and open up a can of "whup-ass" on the Blue Meanies. We may be smaller than them, but we are pure of heart and we manage to bring down their space vehicle. However, we now have no way to get home.
I don't think we have seen the Engineers yet in any of the trailers. I think they are a dying, benevolant race that meant well but some of their "children" turned out bad, really bad.
Anyway, that's my theory.
You are free to blow holes in it. Criticism is appreciated.
