Let's get something out of the way before this article proceeds, Pacific Rim 2 is happening. The existence of this sequel is not a matter of if, but a matter of when. Newly partnered Universal Studios are eager to bring the Jaegers and Kaiju back to the silver screen alongside their new partners at Legendary Entertainment. However, the project is currently placed on the Studio's backburner while they give the creative team plenty of time to create an epic follow-up to one of 2013's most underappreciated blockbusters. A script and budget for the film, currently dubbed 'Maelstrom' has already been submitted and awaits the greenlight. The plot as far as we know will take a very different route from the first film and will act as a follow-up sequel and not as a prequel as some fans speculated early on.
However, despite the hope and eager anticipation, it seems one crucial part of Pacific Rim 2 may be looking to focus his efforts elsewhere. Now, please keep in mind this is unconfirmed and should be taken as nothing more than rumor until more concrete information is released. That being said, according to Koreaportal.com, Charlie Hunnam, star of the first Pacific Rim movie may be turning his focus towards a role as the Green Arrow in Warner Brother's upcoming Justice League pursuit instead of holding out for a return as Jaeger pilot and international hero, Raleigh Becket. With no confirmed release date for Pacific Rim 2, it's no surprise Hunnam would be interested in more stable gigs for the time being. But, the thought of Hunnam turning down a role in the Pacific Rim sequel in favor of a role in Warner Brother's expansion of the DC cinematic universe could pose problems for the continuation of this budding sci-fi franchise.
Until we hear from Charlie Hunnam or other official outlets, we should all take this rumor with a grain of salt. For discussion's sake however, let us know what you think of Hunnam's potential exit of the franchise in the comments section below!
