Indiana Jones has landed in the popular consciousness again with the announcement recently of a new Indiana Jones movie. However, it appears that Lucasfilm may have further plans then just a new movie. On Sunday, ILM president Lynwen Brennan spoke about the future of the Indiana Jones Franchise at Star Wars Celebration Europe:
"Kiri [Hart] and her group have mapped out a story and timeline across multiple platforms many years in advance, many exhausting years in advance. … We have a great honor to have responsibility for, so we want to be really careful with that. Not only for Star Wars but with Indiana Jones, which we’re all really excited about as well.”
It appears that the Lucasfilm Story group has many years worth of storylines planned out for Indiana Jones. The comments about 'multiple platforms' may indicate that Lucasfilm plans for an extended universe for Indiana Jones once again. In the past, the Indiana Jones franchise has been represented in multiple forms of media from comic books, to original novels.
The last Indiana Jones comics were in the eighties, but a Indiana Jones comics series could be done well, especially given the success of Marvel's current Star Wars Imprint. In addition, this may mean the return of Indiana Jones original novels. The last Indiana Jones novel was written in 2009, however there are still plenty of relics that Indiana Jones could pursue. It could also be useful to fill in the gaps between movies.
Lastly, this may mean the revival of other Indiana Jones properties such as Video Games. Uncharted and Tomb Raider clearly have taken inspiration from Indiana Jones, but as of right now there have been no games announced for the newest console generation. With the return of Indiana Jones to movie screens, it will be the perfect opportunity for the franchise to expand in this manner.
Indiana Jones 5 will release July 19, 2019. The film will feature the return of Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. The movie will also be directed by Steven Spielberg. George Lucas will Executive Produce the film. Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall will also return to produce. The film does not currently have a title.
