Although it is unclear exactly where and when Variety have reported that Disney Chief Bob Iger had recently had a meeting with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy about the studio's future plans for releasing a Star Wars movie every year up to and beyond 2021. Fans will know that Disney is expected to continue producing Star Wars movies for the unforeseeable future, alternating between the Episodic releases and the "Star Wars Story" spin-offs originally known as anthologies. Although any quotes from Iger about the space operas future are not forthcoming, Iger's comments on the forthcoming Rogue One are quoted.
“It’s really interesting in terms of ‘Star Wars’ storytelling. ‘Star Wars’ has only been told as a saga, and this is a moment in time … we love what we’ve seen. We never felt it would do the level that ‘Force Awakens’ did. The level of interest [in ‘Rogue One’] is as high as it was for ‘Force Awakens.'”
In short, Iger is playing down the recent bad press about the Rogue One reshoots by showing that Disney is invested in the Star Wars franchise. Though, of course, he is also covering his tracks as nobody rightfully expects Rogue One to earn as much as The Force Awakens $2.1 billion in box office takings.
Following creator George Lucas' often changing gameplan, fans expect Disney will follow up the forthcoming two instalments of the "Sequel Trilogy" with another trilogy of episodes interweaved with more spin-offs, should the latter prove successful. Thus, in theory, the future for Star Wars would look something like this...
